The 4:1 Rule

The 4:1 Rule is SLIM TLC’s healthy eating guideline.  It recommends that you:

Eat at least four healthily-prepared plant- and fatty seafood-based foods for every “whatever” food.

By “whatever” we mean, literally, whatever – healthy or not.  This includes, but is not limited to, anything that is not a healthily-prepared plant- or fatty-fish based food.  It leaves it wide open, to accommodate just about any eating preference.  You can eat anything you want, just as long as it falls into the ratios recommended by The 4:1 Rule.

Everyone knows that we need to eat more fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and fatty seafood (e.g., salmon, tuna, trout, mackeral, mahi-mahi, sardines, shrimp).  What people do not appreciate is the sheer variety of foods that you have full permission to eat, and the sheer power for health and weight management that exists therein!  See Where’s Your PS²? for more information.

Did you know that the average person in America eats the exact opposite from the 4:1 way?  On average, we take in >80% of our calories from non-plant- and fatty seafood-based foods or unhealthily-prepared plant- and fatty-fish based foods (with oil, sugar, butter, refined, etc., including French fries, potato chips, etc.).  We have a long way to go!  If you are currently guilty of eating the 1:4 way, you may desire to start instead with the “The 1:1 Rule” or  “The 2:1 Rule.”

The magic of eating mostly healthily-prepared plants and fatty seafood is that if you do so, you will be able to eat whenever you are truly hungry, without having to worry about counting calories or points, controlling your appetite or hunger, or measuring portions – and, you achieve an amazing level of health!  The concept is magical – and dumps the whole diet world on its head.  You simply eat when you are hungry.  Permission to eat?  Granted!  The catch or fine print?  You must choose the right foods to eat.  And, in order to be able to choose the right foods, you have to make sure they are available, wherever and whenever you want to eat.
